My son who is 14 months keeps grinding his teeth together very loudly,he has 4 at the bottom and one at the top. What can I do to stop him apart from the obvious,telling him no stop it. Its horrible to hear it and it cant be doing his teeth any good.

my son is 16months old and has all of his teeth except the back 4 and he does this sometimes too, it really annoys my partner and he keeps telling him to stop it as he cant stand the sound,
it dont bother me though as i also grind my teeth when im asleep and i have done since i was 2yrs old (im now nearly 29) and it has not done any harm to my teeth, it just sounds really bad.
im sure he will grow out of it soon, my son used to do it often and now its only every now and then, he goes days without doing it at all now.
Reply:Talk to a dentist. There are mouth guards available that he can wear to bed. It%26#039;s going to wreak havoc on his jaws and teeth if something isn%26#039;t done about it.
I know that when I grind my teeth I am usually stressed about something.
Reply:ya, talk to a dentist. they usually have something to protect the teeth with. my friend does it in her sleep, and she has something to protect her teeth.

Infant grinding teeth?
My son is 10 months old and has 4 top and 4 bottom teeth. He has gotten into the habit of grinding his teeth. I can not stand the sound. It makes me nauseous just listening to it. I have tried telling him no and that makes him laugh and do it more. I have given him cold teethers, finger foods, and tylenol and that doesn%26#039;t help. I have started putting him in his crib every time he does it and leaving him in there for a few minutes but he thinks that is a game too. I know it should not hurt his teeth but he does this all day long and I feel like I am going to pull all my hair out if he doesn%26#039;t stop. Is there anything that anyone has tried that really works or am I just going to have to invest in some earplugs until he outgrows it?

My son is 10 months old, he has two teeth on bottom and just got four (all at the same time!) on bottom. He has been grinding his teeth together, and it sounds awful to me. Should I be concerned, or is this something that he%26#039;ll stop doing on his own?

Reply:I spoke to our dentist about this issue. Did you ever notice how babies eye teeth are really sharp when they come in but most of us do not have sharp eye teeth as adults? The dentist told me all children grind their teeth (some more than others) it is natures way of filing them down and getting the bite right. My middle son has very sharp eye teeth at age 5 because his bite isn%26#039;t alligned correctly and the grinding doesn%26#039;t help .... probably looking at braces in the future. Any way .... the grinding is normal and he will just stop it on his own as he gets older.

My 9 month old daughter started grinding her teeth last week and its abs driving me up the wall. have any of you mums out there had this problem. an how do you prevent the little ones from grinding away??

you can buy rubber %26#039;first toothbrush%26#039;s%26#039;. They are just like a normal toothbrush handle and shape but with a rubber, oval shaped, knobbly head on it. I think they come from Safety First in a little tooth brush, nail clipper etc...baby kit. Or separately.
They are great when babies knash their teeth together. She is probably doing it because she is teething and it feels good. You could also let her chew/suck on a teething ring which is cold or get a non drip sippy cup and fill with cool boiled water. Add some ice-cubes to make it really cold. Let her sip on that and it should ease any discomfort and stop her grinding for a bit. And she%26#039;ll be getting water at the same time!
Best of luck and most of all, just ride it out. She will stop with time.

Try Orajel at night to sooth her pain, it has a numbing effect.
Try not to give th baby too much stress (try to keep her satisfied at this age especially and have her cry less as possible. Stress causes teeth grinding as well... At this age you cannot spoil a baby)
I would not recommend other extreme measures like mouth guards etc....

Anyway, grinding is not so unusual among babies and kids. You may want to consult a pedodontist (pediatric dentist) right away so that it can be solved. They might give her a mouth guard/night guard to prevent her from grinding.

We gave her a Nook to try to keep her teeth apart while she slept and it worked for her. The only issue is not to let the Nook become addictive to her. She is almost 3 now and she still wants it. Maybe try talking to a pediatrician also for more ideas. Good luck!

My daughter is 20 months and she%26#039;s grinding her teeth in her sleep. Her cot is still in our room through lack of space and my partner grinds his teeth too so i%26#039;ve got the horrific noise coming from both sides! Reply:Its not the sound you should be worrying about, its the irreparable damage being done to your daughters and husbands teeth. Since your husband is already taken care of, he%26#039;s no worry, but your little girl is a different story.
I would take your daughter to the dentist as well, though I dont know what they could do, because of the risk of her choking on a night guard. If she continues this behavior she will rip the little enamel that she has on her teeth exposing them to decay and further problems like nerve infection, which is sometimes fatal. Baby teeth are incredibly sensitive and though they are temporary do effect dental health in the long run.
A toddler has no other reason for this kind of activity other than stress. Try reducing stress factors for example, brightly colored toys and decor over-stimulate a baby trying to get to sleep. If her area is a bright color then send her over to grandmas for a week and repaint to a softer pastel color. If there%26#039;s a street light outside get some thick curtains. Mobiles are ok but keep it simple. Make sure she does a lot of activity during the day so she%26#039;s sleepy when she%26#039;s put down to bed, and steer clear of lots of loud noise, bright lights and fighting (not to say that you and your husband fight but you get what I mean). Make sure she%26#039;s not cranky when she%26#039;s put down (thats already too late of a bedtime) but peaceful and serene. 7:30 is a good bedtime.
Doing these things should lower her stress level and she should sleep more peacefully without teeth grinding.

Reply:your toddler is experiencing background stress and is possibly showing signs of being very highly strung. she needs to get a mouth guard and you should keep an eye on her emotionally too.
Reply:Make an appointment with a pediatric dentist for your daughter. Find out what, if anything, you can/should do at this time. Grinding teeth can cause TMJ and you certainly wouldn%26#039;t want your daughter to have that! She also will tend to get earaches (it%26#039;s not infected, it%26#039;s because the jaw hinge swells).
I disagree with other posters. Stress is often NOT the cause of grinding teeth, particularly in children.

I took my son to the dentist when he was 2 years old and the dentist advised me that many children and adults do this while asleep and that there is no underlining cause for it. My son is now nearly seven and still does it at night. I am sorry i cannot offer you a cure but i just wanted to reasure you that it is normally and nothing to worry about although as you say the noise is annoying. Have you tried going to sleep listening to music on headphones or even using cotton wool in the ears (i resorted to this several times when son slept in our room) Best wishes

I would take your daughter to the dentist as well, though I dont know what they could do, because of the risk of her choking on a night guard. If she continues this behavior she will rip the little enamel that she has on her teeth exposing them to decay and further problems like nerve infection, which is sometimes fatal. Baby teeth are incredibly sensitive and though they are temporary do effect dental health in the long run.
A toddler has no other reason for this kind of activity other than stress. Try reducing stress factors for example, brightly colored toys and decor over-stimulate a baby trying to get to sleep. If her area is a bright color then send her over to grandmas for a week and repaint to a softer pastel color. If there%26#039;s a street light outside get some thick curtains. Mobiles are ok but keep it simple. Make sure she does a lot of activity during the day so she%26#039;s sleepy when she%26#039;s put down to bed, and steer clear of lots of loud noise, bright lights and fighting (not to say that you and your husband fight but you get what I mean). Make sure she%26#039;s not cranky when she%26#039;s put down (thats already too late of a bedtime) but peaceful and serene. 7:30 is a good bedtime.
Doing these things should lower her stress level and she should sleep more peacefully without teeth grinding.

Reply:your toddler is experiencing background stress and is possibly showing signs of being very highly strung. she needs to get a mouth guard and you should keep an eye on her emotionally too.
Reply:Make an appointment with a pediatric dentist for your daughter. Find out what, if anything, you can/should do at this time. Grinding teeth can cause TMJ and you certainly wouldn%26#039;t want your daughter to have that! She also will tend to get earaches (it%26#039;s not infected, it%26#039;s because the jaw hinge swells).
I disagree with other posters. Stress is often NOT the cause of grinding teeth, particularly in children.
Reply:hi, my son has been grinding his teeth ever since they came through and I have also been told that I do while i am asleep. I took my son to the dentist when he was 2 years old and the dentist advised me that many children and adults do this while asleep and that there is no underlining cause for it. My son is now nearly seven and still does it at night. I am sorry i cannot offer you a cure but i just wanted to reasure you that it is normally and nothing to worry about although as you say the noise is annoying. Have you tried going to sleep listening to music on headphones or even using cotton wool in the ears (i resorted to this several times when son slept in our room) Best wishes

Rabbit grinding teeth is this normal?
i have a polish drwaft rabbit, i have had her for 8 years now, and she has starting to grind her teeth. it always sounds like someone taking there nails to a chalk board its very annoying, shes still eating and drinking fine, i gave her a carrot last night and she ate it, but the grinding of the teeth is that normal, she is an indoor rabbit most of the time on nice days i put her in her outdoor cage for fresh air.

Check to see if your rabbit has a broken tooth, has wolf teeth (teeth curl and go all over the place), or to see if you can feel an abscess under the rabbit%26#039;s chin. Abscesses under the chin will often form due to a tooth problem.
You can put something in for your rabbit to chew on, but it is not necessary. The rabbit will chew on most anything even the cage wire to wear its teeth down.
Also, don%26#039;t feed your rabbit ears of corn. I%26#039;ve noticed that rabbits tend to break their teeth fairly often when they are given an ear of corn to chew on.

Can grinding teeth cause my front teeth to become somewhat loose?
I went to the dentist and he told me that my teeth are not loose..but i can feel that they are not tight...he also told me that it%26#039;s because I%26#039;m grinding and clenching them...will my teeth fall out? It%26#039;s making me very nervous. I don%26#039;t want t loose my teeth. I purchased a Night guard...will that work?
